CELEBRATE YOUR HOME'S FLAWS

You're perfect, but your home has its quirks. Be upfront about potential problems or issues your swap partners should know about before they enter your home. That loose stair? Point it out before a fall ruins someone's vacation. The drawer that comes all the way out if you pull too hard? You're used to it but the swap family isn't.

Identifying possible flaws sends a good message. By admitting that you need to replace your dishwasher because it sometimes leaks you show exchangers that you have good communication, avoid their disappointment, and perhaps ensure that your swap partner appreciates a casual decor style, etc.

The other reason to be upfront is that what one person sees as flaws another person might see as pluses. Your trafficky, busy neighborhood also has convenient freeway access. A small apartment requires less cleaning. Your dark living room has a leafy tree to bring a sense of the country into the city. And so on.

Good home exchange is all about good communication. Make sure your swap partner gets both.
