HOME EXCHANGE MEMBERSHIP COSTS

There are many swap clubs of which I have been a member for months or years. As I have become more experienced with home exchange I have started shedding clubs. It's not worth it to me to have my information up on a site if I never get swap offers through that web page. I can't remember to update more than one or two listing pages. And some clubs, being free, attract more email spammers or scammers.

At this point, I have a top pick for home exchange clubs: HomeExchange.com. They have the most listings, at 16,000. Their membership has tripled in the past five years so they're probably doing something right.

KEEP IT CHEAP

A reader wrote in to inform me that HomeExchange.com had doubled its annual membership fee to $99. That's really steep. The industry standard appears to be $50-60, or about half of what HomeExchange.com charges. However, I noticed that HomeExchange.com has a deal: two years' membership for $70 per year. That's a significant savings and makes it reasonable to join the home exchange site with the most members.

EVEN BETTER DEALS

HomeForExchange.com offers 18 months for $60. That works out to only $40 per year. They have 10,000 members and the members seem quite active. I get the second-most offers from this club. If you're looking for a European exchange, this club is at least as good of an option as HomeExchange.com. H4E has hundreds of members in most European countries and over 1,000 in France alone.

THE BEST DEAL

HomeForExchange.com has had some questionable recruitment practices in the past, but it may be on a better track with a generous offer for exchangers who refer a new member:

"How the referral program works.
As a member of HomeForExchange.com you can give away free 6 months trial memberships to others. By doing this you do not only give a nice present, but you will be also rewarded with a credit of $15.00 US on your account once this trial member becomes a 'paid member'.

- Send as many gift vouchers as you like.
- Receive a credit of $15.00 on your account per paid signup.
- Referral fees can be used for future renewal fees or transferred to your bank account.
- The email address of your friend will not and never be used for anything else.
- Monitor your own referrals activity online."
