It can be difficult and frustrating to try to write to someone if you do not speak their language. How do you offer your home to someone in the Mediterranean if their email is all Greek to you?
These days, many people look to technology to help them connect with folks around the world. Many sites offer free automatic translation of several paragraphs of text. What a perfect solution to international communication, right? Sorry, no.
Here is an example of why you must not rely on computer translation programs to communicate with foreign swap partners. This is an actual email I received about a home exchange. I have made no changes, other than the swapper's first name.
I should note that I received one initial email from this exchanger which was practically incomprehensible. When I replied, I subtly offered in the exchangers' native language that we could communicate in that language (in which I am relatively fluent). The swapper did not take the hint. The message below demonstrates that he should have.
"Our flat is located next to a park and our neighbours are friends us. We feel in security in Montreal.
We work on the Plateau Mount - Royal which belongs to 2 kilometres from our home. We use bikes and transport together to perform our displacements.
Nearby, you will find services (small trade, supermarkets) and one multitudes of cultural activities; museums, cinemas and restaurants, specially to downtown and Plateau.
We like to make exchange between December 30th and January 5th or 6th, would it admit you?
Marie, my loving, is very allergic to the cats. In your announcement, you mention that yours am not allergenic. Is Quant indeed?
An article appeared in the newspaper mentioned that Brookleen was a connected up quarter, are you near cultural activities and other charms?
By hoping to have answered your questions and the pleasure of corresponding with you with the intention of making concrete this plan."
What is particularly odd is the mention of "Brookleen" (Brooklyn) which is never mentioned in my listing and is completely unrelated to anything else in this email. I have no expectation of being able to come to a clear understanding with this person. Failing that, one should never arrange a swap.
