OUTSIDE THE FLORIDA HOUSE

Swappers from Florida had enjoyed a non-simultaneous exchange at our home while we were visiting relatives. Now it was our turn to use their place and we were finally about to enter their home.

So far we had not been delighted with the experience. We returned home to find a dirty apartment and a four-foot high mound of wet and dirty linens. It was clear that these exchangers had exceeded the five guest maximum they had requested. The linens and personal items we found left behind told the tale: they had stuffed our apartment with as many guests as would fit, including at least one young boy and girl.

Our half of the exchange had looked tenuous due to poor communication and the complicated logistics demanded by the swapper. But everything had worked out and we were about to enter the exchange home. Would it be worth it?

From the outside, the house definitely had curb appeal. It was large with interesting architectural features. An octagonal room anchored one side of the house. On the other was a lighthouse-like tower topped by a widows walk.

We had seen pictures of the home's interior before committing to the exchange. But nothing had gone right with this swap. Some homes photograph well but don't feel "right" inside. Based on our experience so far I wondered what we would find when we turned the key. And I was about to find out.
