Home Exchange's Cardinal Sin

What is the worst thing another home exchanger can do to you? The fear most have is the rxchangers destroying their house, but in over five decades of home exchange, only minor breakage of personal items has ever been reported.

The real risk in home exchange is that your home exchange partners will back out after confirming a vacation swap.

Having your travel plans unilaterally canceled is disappointing.

You may have begun researching and dreaming about the destination. Many exchangers invite friends or extended family members to join them in the swap home (with the home-owners' permission, of course). That means letting down loved ones due to an exchange partner's unreliability.

If you have already booked your transportation to the swappers' home town it can be expensive as well as upsetting when they decide they cannot follow through with the exchange.

To try to lessen the risk and consequences of flakiness on the part of my exchange partners I now have an action plan for confirming my exchanges. More on that later. In the meantime, have you ever been left high and dry by your exchange partners? Tell us about it through the comments link below.
