WHEN YUPPIES INVADE

We have a problem, but we're going to turn those lemons into lemonade. See, as we say in our home exchange listing, we have the hottest and best-situated located in Manhattan. There is no New York City area other than Chelsea with a higher concentration of great restaurants in every price range. We are in the heart of the gallery district. There is great shopping, lots of parks, we are convenient to all parts of Manhattan and the region and so on. Problem is, other people have discovered how great it is to live in Chelsea.

We used to have parking lots in our neighborhood. On the weekends, they filled with vendors selling interesting flea market finds. Now buildings are rising where those empty lots used to be.

There are lots of pluses to our new neighbors. Better shopping, more funding for new parks, and much higher property values have all accompanied these changes. But there is a major drawback: we have lost part of our River view. All the tall new buildings are going up between us and the Hudson River. That means our location is better (more central, hence more convenient) but they are getting in the way of my calming waterscape.

I have found a silver lining to this inconvenience, one that many urban home exchangers can savor as well. Stay tuned to this space for details.
