Here is a family who wrote in saying they did just that: "We (a family of 5) are travelling to the west coast of Ireland (Connemara) for a week on a home exchange. We paid a penny each way or the flights (on a low cost carrier giveaway), our accommodation, of course, cost us nothing. The only expense is £75 car hire. That's the grand sum of £15.02 each for a weeks holiday!"
(Of course, many swappers trade the use of their cars as well, so even the $150 car rental fee is optional.)
The one-penny fare mentioned by these exchangers is actually quite common. Megabus, here on the East Coast of the USA, sells a block of seats for $1 on every bus.
RyanAir and EasyJet do the same in Europe.
Instead of targeting a home exchange destination for its attractions or climate and then purchasing a transportation ticket, why not work backwards?
Troll the discount airfare websites. When an ultra-cheap flight is announced, buy tickets as far in advance as possible. But don't buy seats only for your own family.
What kind of response rate would you get if you offered the exchangers free airfare (it only cost you a few pennies) on top of a home swap? Who could turn down an offer like that?
