Your Free, Green Summer Vacation Travel

Transportation costs need not ruin your summer vacation plans. There are lots of ways to reduce your travel costs, and environmental impact, to zero.

FREE: Your Feet

Walking isn't just great exercise, it costs you nothing while helping the environment. Making footprints while on vacation will reduce your carbon footprint.

WALK? FROM WHERE?

The key to a pleasant car-free trip is to pick a central location from which you can walk to attractions, services and restaurants. Should you want to go further afield, it is nice to have public transit nearby.

WHERE the WALK is HALF the FUN

Planning to get around on foot rules out a country retreat. Instead, look for city-center locations.

Older cities, like Manhattan or Quebec City, have most of what a tourist wants to see concentrated in a downtown core area.

FAIR DAY for a WALK

If cities are not your thing, plan your trip around a festival or event and pick an exchange home located nearby. We used this method to pinpoint lodging for the Jazz Festivals in Montreal and New Orleans.

WHEN WALKING is the VACATION

There is one instance where walking and a rural home exchange go together like a shoe and a sock. Some people vacation in order to walk.

If the exchange home you pick is located near hiking or walking trails, the lack of other transportation may be a moot point after you arrive.

BE PREPARED

Happy feet need supportive shoes. Your high heels won't mesh with this style of transportation. Hydration is key to safe exercise, so bring a water bottle.

MAP IT

Make sure to use a satellite mapping site like GoggleEarth to check out the streets near your swap home. Are there sidewalks? Is it located next to a busy street or highway?

WALK ON

Walking can be the best way to really see an area. It is great for people-watching and discovering places you skip past in a car. Best of all, walking is friendly to your wallet, your physique and the earth.
