Canadians are so nice. I think Montreal is the best of France combined with the most convenient things about North America. Now I have decided that British Columbia is a mix of that wonderfully rugged Pacific Northwest culture with British civility. Canada is such a great country. I keep waiting to dislike something about it but the only thing I have been able to find is the incredibly boring Quebecois Tour de France commentator we endured during our Montreal swap.
Well, there is one other minor thing. The bears. Do you read the home exchange instructions when you get to a swap house? You should. The document left for us by the Vancouver swapper noted that children should be supervised when playing basketball in the front courtyard because bears are frequent visitors. Oh, and make sure not to leave the garbage out unless you want even more bears. But don't worry about it, the note went on, because the bears are not grizzlies, just the presumably more kitten-like black bears.
We're not in Kansas anymore. Nor are we in downtown Vancouver. This big, rural-feeling swap house is located on the slopes of the North Shore mountains that provide such gorgeous views from downtown Vancouver. It's a bit less convenient than one of the luxury highrises we saw springing up all over central Vancouver, but a refreshing change for us, since we live in the middle of a large city.
It's all good. Except for the bears.
