It isnt just tacky, there is a real danger in mixing home exchange with vacation rentals.

Scams have plagued the informal second home rental market for years. Home exchangers have so far avoided the scammers, largely because money is not supposed to change hands between swap partners.

So any time you receive a home exchange offer and the other party attempts to introduce a financial transaction where none should exist, beware home exchanger.
