MORE TIME TO FIND A HOME EXCHANGE

Did you set your clocks back one hour today? Daylight savings time ended this morning at 2am. Now you have an extra hour to find your perfect home swap!

How much time do you need to invest in getting an exchange set up, anyway? A lot more than you dedicate to making a hotel reservation.

Last minute swap offers are extremely unattractive. They mean the exchanger is spontaneous, which isn't always a good trait for an exchanger. I prefer to swap with people who plan ahead and stick to their plans, not someone who decides to visit my area on the spur of the moment and doesn't put much advance effort into making their trip happen.

On the other hand, I have received offers for exchanges more than a year in advance. Few people plan their travel quite that far ahead. Accepting an exchange offer too far in advance is a recipe for disappointment. Often the exchangers change their minds or have something come up when the exchange is set up so long before the travel dates.

For weekend swaps near home, exchangers might only need a few weeks to get to know each other or finalize an agreement. Anything that involves getting onto an airplane should be scheduled several months up to a year ahead of time.

Save the spontaneity for your destination. For dates, more time is better than less.
