IT AIN'T A HOTEL, BUT....

No home exchanger who stays at our place is going to mistake it for a hotel. There is no front desk, the concierge is on leave, the pillows are mint-less. However, our apartment shouldn't strike swappers as a work camp either.

The automatic cat litter box and recirculating fountain with one gallon reservoir had taken the messier chores off the exchangers' hands. We just purchased an item that will free our exchange partners from the last bit of cat-care drudgery we cruelly imposed upon the previous 40 exchange families. That consisted of placing a bowl of dry food on the floor for kitty once per day.

Now the robots care for our cat. We got an automatic cat feeder. It dispenses food up to three times each day in large or small quantities and it holds 10 pounds of kibble. That's enough to keep the cat purring for about a month.

She wasn't delighted about the sudden clattering bursts of cat food coming down the chute but she likes to eat so she adapted. Now we can truly say that our cat is no trouble whatsoever -- as long as our swap partners are not allergic!

How can you reduce your swap partners' workload when they stay at your place? A drip irrigation tubing system saves water, keeps your plants healthy and eliminates the chore of watering the garden. There are similar watering systems available for houseplants.

Should you have a delivery stop put on your mail and newspaper, or will your swap partners really enjoy carrying them in each day?

Automatic feeders for cats, dogs and even fish. Even if your exchange partners are reliable animal lovers, limiting feedings to times and portions you control can ensure your don't worry about the livestock when you are supposed to be relaxing.

Free pet care is a huge benefit of swapping homes when on vacation. But limiting that care to the occasional pat will expand your home exchange horizons and free your swap partners to really enjoy your home.
