ARE YOUR SWAP PARTNERS TRYING ON YOUR UNDERWEAR?

The folks at the newly re-designed home exchange club review site KnowYourTrade clued me in to an odd article on home exchange.

A writer for the Financial Times of London responded to her recent home swap with a uniquely philosophical perspective. She explored the connection between home exchange and altruism. She also investigated her swap partners' closets.

I always assume -- nay, fervently pray -- that swappers will respect my request that they store their clothing in the closet near the main bathroom, where we have cleaned our drawers and cleared hanging space for them. My bedroom closet area does not spotlight my magnificent organizational skills, which makes sense, as I have none.

Still, as swappers we must know that our exchange partners are looking at, and making judgments about, our decorating style, family mementos, and yes, even clothing.

It is pretty easy to see if you will mesh with your swap partners along these lines before you ever agree to bare your closet to them. The key is excellent interior photos. Look at every room in their home before you leap into a swap.

When I first started exchanging I prized speed and location over other factors in selecting a swap home. If the exchangers had good, quick follow through I didn't worry about what their home looked like.

But just as some people prefer a modern boutique hotel to a homey country inn, the decor and amenities of a swap home can affect your vacation experience.

That antiques-filled, all-white villa may not be the right environment for your toddler. So don't worry about being shallow. See what you are getting with photos of every room, and make sure your next swap is a lifestyle match as much as a destination sync.
