IS IT TIME FOR YOUR BRITISH SWAP?

Home exchangers cannot revel in our own luck when our nation's currency rises and another country's exchange rate gets worse. It isn't us against formerly expensive foreign hotels and restaurants. In our swap community we need to remember that when the currency of our own country gets stronger it lessens the likelihood of finding swappers eager to exchange with us in that destination.

Of course, we can help strengthen the economy in another country by spending our travel funds to vacation there. With that in mind, I was surprised to note the change in value of the British pound versus the American dollar.

A year ago at this time it took more than two dollars to buy just one British pound. Now it costs just $1.42. That pint of warm ale that was $10 is now $7. A few years ago we looked at whether a home exchanger can visit Europe for $95 per day. That amount nets just 66 British pounds so I'm not sure how much fun that trip might be, but I have another idea.

While Great Britain is now a bit more affordable to the American traveler, I'm heading where my travel funds will really stretch. Last year $3 bought 32 Mexican pesos. Today that same $3 can be exchanged for 46 pesos. Mmmm. Warm hand-made tortillas and cold beer. I'm headed South.
