Last night a home exchange couple from Montreal came to visit. They had asked if we would like to do a home swap with them. I had to decline the offer to trade homes, but I invited the couple to come see our place in case they would like to swap apartments in the future.
I often invite swappers to meet us and see our home if they visit Manhattan. While these interactions rarely turn into actual vacation trades, it is nice to extend hospitality and meet other home exchangers.
The Montrealers surprised us with a nice bottle of wine. We gave them a tour of the apartment, which they seemed to like. It seems unlikely that they will plan to visit New York City again in the near future, but it was interesting to meet them.
When they bid us adieu they thanked us for the opportunity to meet and chat with "real New Yorkers". That is what home exchange is all about. You may find it interesting to meet other swappers if they visit your town, whether or not you ever trade homes with them. Why not invite some in? They may reciprocate and show you some of their lives. Your vacation is sure to be more interesting as a result.
