OUR THREE-WAY SWAP

It took us a while to get on the road to our Cape Cod exchange home. That's because we were getting our apartment ready for our latest swappers. We have a family from Montreal in our home this weekend. They have never exchanged before. They lucked into using our place at the last minute, even though we almost never accept spur-of-the-moment swaps. We are wary of folks who are overly casual. In this instance, however, the swappers merely pointed out that we had this weekend still listed in our availability calendar.

We had been holding out for a non-simultaneous exchange with Montreal. Even though this weekend is Thanksgiving up there, we hadn't found the right home with people who could let us use their place next summer. Now we were counting down the last week until our Cape Cod get-away and our home would be vacant. Anathema to an exchange family, especially one with cats.

Just as we were wondering who would take care of our pets while we were gone, this request came from Montreal. Sorry for the late notice, but was our home still available? Actually, yes. We asked the standard questions but it was too late to really get to know these folks, and they are brand-new to home exchange. With no time left to mail housekeys, we arranged for our cat sitter to meet them and let them in. She would make sure they had everything they needed.

This family fell into a few traps that first-time exchangers should avoid. I'll tell you about those another day so you can avoid them on your swaps.
