DOUBLE THE SIZE OF YOUR EXCHANGE HOME

If you are setting out to do home exchange with a large group, examine your home first. If you are asking for a home large enough to accommodate your big family, you need to make sure you can offer similar lodging.

Do your eight children happily share two bedrooms at home? Exchange partners may not feel comfortable with this set up in their own home. When I was asked to house seven adults from one family in my previous apartment, a tiny one-bedroom/one-bath place, I was so astounded by the swappers' poor judgment I put them right into my "bad home exchangers" file. Even after I pointed out that most of them would have to sleep laid out like a jigsaw puzzle on the floor, the exchangers maintained that less than 100 square feet per person was plenty of room.

Whether your home is large or small, is it possible to make your space more flexible so you can accommodate exchange groups as large as your own? Perhaps you have an "in-law" apartment attached to your main home. If so, highlight it in your swap offer. If you don't have extra space such as this, consider investing all that money you will save on hotel fees into some renovation.

Let's face it, asking swappers to host a huge group can be a deal-breaker. But enhancing your home's attractiveness by providing a separate apartment, pointing out your new hot tub or pool, trading a short swap for a longer period of time, or offering your (presumably large) vehicle as part of the swap could tempt otherwise dis-interested exchange partners.
