The problem was, I'm spoiled. The space and convenience of staying in someone's home has put me off hotels entirely.
Some of the South Beach boutique hotels had beautiful modern rooms but they were just that -- a single room.
With two kids, our ideal is a two-bedroom apartment, or three-bedrooms if grandpa joins us, which he would on this trip.
One possible solution was an all-suites hotel. Sometimes geared to business travelers assigned to a region for a month or two, these hotels offer some of the conveniences of home exchange.
For the same price as a hotel room we could get a suite with a kitchenette and a separate bedroom. The trade-off was beach access. The all-suite hotels were inland of Miami Beach. That was not a compromise we wanted to make.
There are quite a few options for renting apartments in different cities. Miami has a glut of orphaned condos purchased by speculators before the recent drop in the real estate market.
We found a 2-bedroom place with full kitchen right on the beach. Just above the historic Art Deco section of South Beach, it rented for $200 per day. This was less than two decent hotel rooms, but more spacious and convenient.
Problem solved we headed to Florida.
