"I read somwhere about a book and film called Tara Road by Maeve Binchy. I haven't seen the film or read the book as I don't enjoy books by this authoress but I can see that home exchange has good dramatic potential especially from your recent posts!!"
As Kate indicates, the novel from which this movie was made is unlikely to be a deathless classic of its literary genre. After all, it was a selection in Oprah's Book Club. But it's about home exchange, darn it! So I guiltily admit that I ordered it.
The book came out almost ten years ago and was made into a film starring Andie MacDowell in 2005. All I can say is the publicists for the other home exchange movie, "The Holiday", did a better job. I never heard of "Tara Road" until Kate enlightened me.
And my assertion that "The Holiday" is the best Hollywood home exchange movie ever made still rings true. "The Holiday" was in no danger of being nominated for any Oscars, but it was pleasant enough, especially at Christmastime. "Tara Road" ranks lower on Internet Movie Data Base than "The Holiday", garnering a 6.0 average rating to 6.9 for "The Holiday". So it's probably pretty crummy.
Still, now that we have two home exchange movies, the good news is we can now run a Home Exchange Film Festival! If anyone else knows of another home exchange novel we can even start our own book club...
