That Uneasy Feeling

The problems with our Florida swap started the moment our exchange partners walked in the door.

Travel can be stressful and being out the worst in people.

Delayed flights, traffic from the airport, even schlepping suitcases can make anyone show a less attractive side of herself.

And as a New Yorker I remember living in California and receiving feedback that my manner seemed pretty intense to my laid-back Northern California brethren.

Keep these factors in mind when I tell you that she walked into our home with her attitude turned up to 11. She came across as the most abrasive person I have ever met, and that's an assessment from someone who has to watch her own natural NYC abrasiveness quotient (and I should note that when we met her on her own turf months later she was somewhat less intense).

If a New Yorker finds your personality to be too strong, call your psycho-pharmacologist right away.

Well, I was leaving this woman to enjoy my home, not vacationing with her. She could be as charming -- or not -- as she liked, as long as she respected our home.

It immediately became apparent that she did not. More on that later....
