WHERE ON EARTH IS THE HOME EXCHANGE?

Had a logical question from loyal reader Kate: did we research our poorly-located Florida exchange home on Google Earth? Great point. Google Earth is a free computer program that uses satellite photos to show a bird's eye view of many addresses.

Aerial map views are a resource we always use to see how close a swap home is to other properties, attractions, major roads and so on. In the case of this Florida home exchange we did not look the property up on a satellite mapping program before the swap.

Why did we fail to use this free, helpful resource to make sure we were comfortable with the home's location? We had no choice. The exchanger refused to give us her location before the swap began.

Huh? We didn't even know where the home was and we agreed to swap? What, are we nuts?

Well, sort of. This was a non-simultaneous exchange. We're used to doing our swaps on a handshake basis, and an electronic handshake, at that. We exchange lots of emails, perhaps a call or two. We get a sense of the family with whom we are swapping. We work out details and agree on the parameters of the exchange.

In this particular swap, some details were missing and others were useless. In addition, the exchangers did not honor their end of the agreement. What happened and how did we react? You'll have to tune in next time to find out.
