This weekend we are completing our half of the non-simultaneous swap to Rehoboth Beach. Weekend destinations near our home are something we are always eager to do. In this case, the swapper is selling his beach home so we had better enjoy it while we can.
He sent us the info for getting in to his house. At the bottom of the email he attached several paragraphs of local events scheduled for this weekend. What a considerate and easy thing for any home exchanger to do! Our-of-town swap partners may not be aware of web pages that list upcoming events. Locals, however, may be in the habit of checking for fun activities to enjoy in their home area. Sending these links to swap partners as they head to your home for an exchange shows your thoughtfulness and concern for the swappers' comfort and enjoyment of your home.
Even though it is the off-season in this beach resort there are still some interesting activities. There's a kite festival that looks like fun, and a huge indoor flea market the following day. It's a good sign that there are some things happening months before the area really attracts vacationers.
We just had a swap offer from a family that lives in the Great Smokey Mountains. This is an area we are always eager to visit because my children's grandparents live nearby. I had never heard of the town and I am hesitant to visit certain areas of the Southeast due to certain regressive anti-family legislation Southern states in the United States inexplicably embrace.
I searched for events and attractions in the area and came up with little to recommend the town as a destination. The Wikipedia article on the area had nothing more exciting to report than the fact that the only local mall went out of business.
It just didn't sound appealing. In the better part of two decades as a home exchanger, I have learned to trust my instinct on these matters. I thanked the swapper for her interest and left her area open as a possibility for the future, but I will keep looking for my Southern home swap.
