IS THE EXCHANGE HOME FOR SALE?

It was a bit of a shock to be asked to sign a home exchange contract only to learn by accident that the swap home in question is for sale. We like to give exchange partners the benefit of the doubt so we tried to keep our email to the swappers neutral:

"We're a little confused on this end. We did Google map search for your address so we could see how far it is to drive to several places we're going. What came up on the search along w/the map was a "For Sale" listing for your swap home. Is your house for sale?"

This wasn't my first reaction, believe me. Home exchange is all about trust and communication between the two swap parties. The reason we created a contract was to make all aspects of the swap clear. Having an exchange home to use is definitely an important aspect of home exchange. To me, there really is no explanation that can excuse the glaring omission of listing one's home for sale after agreeing to let exchangers use it ten months later. But I'm open-minded. What would the exchanger say?

Well, nothing very impressive it turns out. Yes, it's for sale. If they sell it they are buying a better home nearby. That is certainly their right. And if the swapper had presented it to us honestly from the beginning that might have changed my feelings about the matter.

As it is, my inclination is to cancel the swap and report the exchanger to the home exchange club. The swap house is for sale? The exchangers could decide not to buy another place. Or get a fixer-upper that would not be ready when the swap dates come up. Maybe this guy has some other surprises up his sleeve. He seems nice on the phone but he gets an "F" in the open communication department.

Am I over-reacting here? Experienced exchangers, have you ever experienced this? What would you do if your future swap partner were selling his house?
