Sometimes a Great Swap Offer Isn't

Sometimes a home exchange offer can seem great at first blush but when you start investigating the details with the other family it becomes clear it just isn't a good match.

I was reminded of this today when I got a funny note from a home exchange pal:

"Loved your blog today.  I agree Sarah Palin needs to do a home exchange.  You go first.  I'm sure her house is kid-friendly if nothing else!"

What would it be like to do a home exchange with Sarah Palin?

I almost had the chance to find out recently when Sarah scheduled a business trip to my hometown of New York City!

Sadly, as nice as her home looked, some barriers to the swap came up when the Palin family started investigating the idea with us:

"Dear Palin Family,

Thank you for the your positive response to our home exchange offer.

I see that your swap party will consist of you, your husband, your 5 children, shotgun son-in-law and at least 1 grandchild.

Home exchange is a great way for large families to travel but we worry you might feel a bit cramped here. Did you notice that we only have three bedrooms?

We appreciate the offer of a vehicle exchange. Yes, we do allow swappers to use our minivan, however none of us knows how to operate a snow mobile.

Yes, I think we would prefer to use the Alaska governor's mansion, rather than your second home in Wasila. No, we don't mind forgoing the per diem you charge the tax-payers for each day your your primary residence is occupied.

It is nice of you to offer to feed our cat but we plan to take several day trips to Russia which I understand from your listing is visible from your home. I'm not sure we would be home every night to feed and run the dog sled team. Could you board them during the swap?

I know this trip came up for you on rather short notice but I think we might need a bit more planning to make an exchange work, considering some of these factors.

It doesn't seem like the swap will work this time but I'm sure you will have a lot more flexibility in your schedule after November 4th. Please be in touch again for a possible future home exchange."
