We no longer have a vacation home -- and as a home exchanger I don't feel the need for one. After all, I have had dozens of homes at my disposal thanks to my swap partners.
The benefit of a second home is the ability to clear out on short-notice if an attractive non-simultaneous swap offer lands in your mail box.
We don't have that luxury and we make it abundantly clear. The first paragraph of our exchange listing does its utmost to dissuade anyone from sending us an exchange offer we won't be able to accept.
We have two cats, and we say this right off the bat. We need a swap home with at least three bedrooms and two bathrooms, since we are usually a three-generational traveling party of five.
The final caveat is the most emphatic. We have tried to avoid disappointing exchangers by being extremely specific about what dates we can swap. We spell it out in no uncertain terms: school holidays from date X to Y and holiday weekends A, B and C.
There is just no room for confusion: non- simultaneous swaps are impossible for us.
Or so I thought.
