KEEP THE HOME EXCHANGE DOOR OPEN

This isn't the first time I have told you we got the best home exchange offer ever. I hope it won't be the last. We have completed 39 home swaps and each of them was great in its own way (except for one or two which were simultaneous awful yet better than a hotel).

Our next home exchange vacation, milestone number 40, is shaping up to be absolutely amazing.

While the destination is not one I would normally consider it's an area where I have friends and family. I have been meaning to visit for some time, it's just that other vacation spots were always more interesting.

But even a town that is not inherently appealing could have a home, neighborhood or attraction so special that it trumps all other considerations. That is the case with this swap.

The offer came for one reason: when originally contacted by the exchangers last summer we refused their offer but left the door open for a future swap.

This family wanted to visit Manhattan for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. We used to love to travel during Thanksgiving week, but now that we are tied to a strict school schedule that just isn't possible.

In refusing the exchangers' offer I made it very clear that we were doing so regretfully and asked them to consider us again. Here is how that looks:

"Thanks for the appealing offer. We are just a few blocks from Macy's in the perfect location for your trip.

Unfortunately, we are tied to school schedules since our son is starting a very challenging pre-K program in Sept. We have only the long weekend at Thanksgiving.

If you would like to spend a magical Christmas week in Manhttan some year, do let us know.

Your children will love the beautiful holiday decorations in the shop windows, the giant Christmas tree and ice skaters in Rockefeller Center, etc.

If you think you might like to visit NYC at another time, pls keep in touch.

Best wishes,"

I only send an email like this if I am truly interested in keeping communication open. From time to time we are contacted again by the same swappers with a more convenient offer. This was one of those times.
