IS HOME EXCHANGE AN ALTERNATE LIFESTYLE

I've always wondered why some (anti-gay) people say being gay is a "lifestyle". I know gay people who are parents of young children. Their "lifestyle" involves the same things as any other parent: up bright and early to fix the kids' breakfast, drag them off to school or day care, hit the playground in the afternoon, help with homework, fall into bed as early as possible. I know a man who is both gay and a tri-athlete. His "gay lifesyle" means running and swimming for three hours before work.

If you want to meet someone with an "alternative lifestyle", getting to know a home exchanger is a better bet.

If you are part of the "home exchange lifestyle" your style of living might include:

* having driven dozens of strangers cars despite the fact that you are not a parking valet

* lots of vacations, all on a tiny travel budget.

* a holiday card list with lots of "friends" you've never met, although you've slept in their beds.

* fretting over whether to get a pet or even a potted plant -- could it lessen your chance to find the perfect swap home?

* quizzical looks from friends who can't believe you just mailed your house keys to someone you don't know in France.

* frequent emails from people in far-off lands who hope they can make a match with you -- but are not mail-order brides.

* spending weeks away from home every year but never paying a penny for luxury lodging

* knowing how to operate every make of remote controls or the trickiest European shower.

Yes, it definitely seems to me that home exchange is an alternative lifestyle. Now my only question is: should we allow home exchangers to marry?
