BIG CHEAP CHANGES

The most dramatic change I made to my new home exchange apartment cost all of $16.

For that price I was able to replace all of the kitchen cabinet handles (technical term "pulls").

The old hardware was laminated plastic. It looked cheesy. The new pulls are metal and appropriate to the old-fashioned feel of the century-old building.

Another big, cheap change to our new swap pad was putting sheer curtains on two windows that have ugly safety bars.  We used tension rods instead of installing curtain rod hardware.  Ten minutes and $20 later the entire kitchen looked softer.

A free modification was reorganizing the kitchen cupboards.  We have shelves, which are uncovered, and cabinets, which have doors.  We moved all the drinking glasses to the shelves and put all the food containers inside the cabinet.  The see-through glasses take up no visual space and the riot of color and shape produced by the boxes of tea, cans of food, and so on are now tucked away out of sight.

Getting your home in shape for summer swaps need not be expensive or labor intensive. Small details can have a big impact.
