BEST PLACES TO SWAP HOMES

Travel sites often list the "Hottest Vacation Destinations".  Home exchangers should be looking for something a bit different.  You're not going to find a swap home in a "hot" vacation spot because what travel editors usually find enticing about a destination it its newness, exotic location, remoteness and so on.

Being on home exchange is more than vacationing.  It is discovering how people live in other places.  So I was interested to find the annual Money magazine list of the best places to live in the United States.  Why not find a swap home on this list and experience real life in a "best place"?

Needless to say, my hometown of Manhattan is not on this list, which is geared towards inexpensive places to live and work.  But if you're looking for a swap in "real, small town America" this list is perfect for you.  Here are the top 25:

Eden Prairie, MN64,000
Columbia/Ellicott City, MD155,000
Newton, MA82,000
Bellevue, WA124,000
McKinney, TX125,000
Fort Collins, CO141,000
Overland Park, KS175,000
Fishers, IN69,000
Ames, IA60,000
Rogers, AR57,000
Plymouth, MN76,000
Highlands Ranch, CO98,000
Woodbury, MN58,000
Carmel, IN67,000
Eagan, MN64,000
Allen, TX84,000
Shawnee, KS61,000
South Jordan, UT51,000
Broomfield, CO55,000
Apple Valley, MN50,000
Missouri City, TX75,000
Irvine, CA208,000
Cary, NC130,000
Rowlett, TX58,000
Gaithersburg, MD59,000

You won't find swap homes in every city on this list, but a map search will show towns nearby so you can broaden your search perimeter.  Good prospects include Newton, MA; Fort Collins, CO; Irvine, CA; Cary, NC and Gaithersburg, MD.

If you are a home exchanger who is lucky enough to live in one of these towns, be sure to highlight your area's award as a 'best place" right on your home exchange listing, or even in the headline describing your home.
