SHOULD YOU TALK TO THE EXCHANGERS BEFORE CONFIRMING?

We rarely meet our home exchange partners and often have not even spoken to them on the phone.  Lately I have been rethinking that.  As small and humble as our new apartment is, we have been deluged with swap requests, thanks to the great location and our complete flexibility with dates.

After long email exchanges with lots of different possible swap partners I narrowed down June's candidates to two.  I thought I preferred one over the other, just based on her emails, but after we spoke on the phone I had completely changed my mind.

The more swapper with the more interesting homes (yes, more than one) had sent a note pressuring me to agree to the swap.  She "had tickets on hold" and had to confirm them immediately.  I chalked this up to her wanting to get things squared away, but she was just as brusque and demanding on the phone.

The other exchanger was delightful when we chatted.  We clicked right away and discovered that we knew some of the same people in the town where she now lives, and I have fond memories of living for two years.  I now think it is crucial to speak on the phone with any swappers before confirming an exchange.  What is your experience?
